Emergency Response: a Matter of Detail

November 2003

Istanbul bombings catch out HSBC when it comes to watching out for the detail

The horrific bombings in Istanbul last week demonstrate why all organisations need to have planned and prepared for the worst case scenario. However, attention to detail must not be forgotten.

See if you can spot the 'faux pas' on HSBC's corporate website following the bombing. As this was hastily removed after we pointed this out to their corporate affairs department, you will have to view a saved version here.

Other details that slipped by include an organisation which forgot to replace their upbeat music on hold on their phone systems. this followed a mass fatality incident killing 30 of their customers.

Another was when bereaved families were flown to the scene of a disaster ( a popular tourist destination) , where local taxi transport was arranged. No one warned the drivers as to the nature of their pickups, resulting in jovial drivers not appreciating the sullen nature of their passengers.
